About Me

In 2020, I completed my studies at Plymouth College of Art with a degree in BA(Hons) Photography. Here my interest in medium format film photography flourished. Although I was keen on pursuing a career in film, I was uncertain about the specific role that would be the best fit for me. It wasn't until I came across an Instagram post advertising the position of Graphics Runner for Series 5 of 'The Crown' that I decided to take a chance and apply. This decision has shaped my journey to where I am today.

About My
Job

What does a film Graphic Designer actually do?

The Art Department design and organise the construction of the sets, Set Decoration adds the furniture and props. As Graphic Designers, we contribute the final touch, helping to create an authentic and lived-in atmosphere. This entails designing anything from posters in a teenager's bedroom to directional signs in an airport or creating a scrapbook for a character. Our role encompasses a wide array of tasks, truly encompassing every aspect of design. A few notable designers in this field are Annie Atkins, known for her course on Graphic Design for Film, and MinaLima, renowned for their work on the Harry Potter Franchise.

How is this distinct from the role of a typical Graphic Designer?

'Real world' graphic designers, as we refer to them, often specialise in a particular area of design, like branding, and typically adhere to one style. However, when designing for film, we must be adept at creating visuals for every historical period and in every conceivable design style.

If you want to find out a little more, Camise Oldfield, Amy Grewcock and Toby Stevens talk about the challenges of working as graphic designers for the TV series The Crown in this interview. The team emphasise the extensive research, frequent script changes, and the pressure to maintain historical accuracy while avoiding legal issues. They also discuss the emotional investment in their work and the importance of teamwork and collaboration.
